A hydro test, or hydrostatic test, is a procedure that determines if a fire extinguisher, air tank, or other pressure vessel is safe to use:
- How it works A professional fills the cylinder with water and places it in a closed system called a test jacket. The cylinder is then pressurized to a specific level, and the total expansion is measured. The cylinder is also visually inspected for leaks or deformities.
- Why it's important Regular hydro tests are necessary because cylinders can degrade over time due to corrosion, weather, or accidental damage. A failed hydro test means the cylinder must be disposed of.
- How often to test The frequency of hydro tests depends on the material the cylinder is made from:
- Steel and aluminum: Every five years
- Hoop-wrapped: Every three years
- Fully wrapped carbon fiber: Every five years
